As you may have recently noticed, I have started displaying some ads on the MegaCraft site. I hope this thread will both explain my reasoning as well as allow people to give feedback on what I am doing. Let's begin...

Why are you putting ads on the site?
The main reason is to bring in some additional revenue for MegaCraft so that I can easily afford to purchase new server nodes as well as pay for some additional things (this website cost upwards of $300 in software and hosting...). With minigames coming along well and the server expanding at an unprecedented rate, I will likely need to expand our infrastructure. The revenue from the ads will help to pay for those things, thus improving the MegaCraft experience as a whole.

I hate ads, they are obtrusive for the content of the site!
While I am currently still experimenting with ad placement and arrangement, I am doing my best to prevent them from becoming distracting from the main content of the site. During the next few weeks, I will be moving them around, attempting to find the the best place to position them where they are not obtrusive but are still being seen.

Hahaha jokes on you I'm running an Ad Blocker!
Short Version: You should not be running an ad blocker. I used to use one, until I released how much of a jerk I was being to the content creators that basically provide things to you for free. Think about it like this: other people (advertisers) are paying the creators to allow you to see the content. People are paying it for you! Why would you opt to prevent other people from paying for your content?

    Long Version:
Let me preface this rant with some background. Like many of you, I used to run an ad blocker all the time. Actually, I even had my android phone rooted so I could block ads on my mobile device as well! However, I soon released the fault in my ways. The internet is an amazing thing, allowing for the creation and spreading of information and ideas quickly and simply. Nowadays, people have devoted their lives to developing the internet and providing content for consumers of all varieties. Most of them do this for free. In order for them to continue to do this for free, content creators needed to reach out to the rest of the internet to find ways to provide for themselves and their followers. Thus, advertisements.

In this rant, I am first going to discuss the reasons that people often choose to block ads. Then I am going to finish with some reasons why you should choose to be a better person and unblock ads.

One of the most common psychological reasons for people to want to avoid ads is because they don't want to be influenced by them. I used to think the same thing. However, internet ads are less about influencing as they are about informing. Ads provide you windows into things that you might never have seen before. If an ad wants to show you some cool new technology, its not influencing you to buy it, but instead informing you that it exists and that you might find it interesting. If you see an ad about an amazing new car, if you are not shopping for a new car, the ad has no effect on you. If you are shopping for a new car, the ad has just informed you of another option you might want to look in to. In no way is viewing the ad forcing you to buy the car.

Another common reason people opt to block ads is because they become obtrusive to the content which you want. This reasoning somewhat more justified, however still a problem. Most sites have found ways to serve ads to you without becoming obtrusive of the content, however there are still those bad eggs that have dollar signs for eyes... In this situation, you can opt to avoid those website entirely. If enough people either complained or boycotted those sites due to their bad ways, they would be forced to change their ad formatting.

An alternative way to view ads is as a service for you, not the advertisers. Due to the structure of the internet, if you are not directly searching for something, it is difficult to find it by accident. Ads provide windows into other parts of the internet that you might not have found. These windows are not like black holes, sucking you in and not letting you return to the part of the internet you were before, but instead doors that can be open, if you so choose.

If you have read this far, I commend you my friend. However, I am not done yet. Now that we have discussed the reasons many people choose to block ads, I now must inform you about why you should change your ways and help better the internet community. As I said previously, many people's full time jobs reside on the internet. These people are giving you content for free and only ask that you enlighten yourself about certain products or services that you might find interesting. Seems like a great deal, doesn't it? If you want to help these people not only continue to do what they do, and even do it better, choose to disable your ad blocker. Even if you don't see my reasoning for why ads are useful to you as well, by disabling your ad blocker you can feel good about yourself every time you visit a website knowing that you are contributing to a better internet and empowering content creators to continue to make awesome stuff.

In the end, the choice is up to you. I'm not here to influence you into disabling your ad blocker, but instead to inform you of the error in your ways and how you can help to improve the internet as a whole.

Why am I getting weird ads display to me?
This could be one of two things.
    1. Google bases the ads displayed to your on both your search history and content you view often. So... I don't know what your lookin' at... but...
    2. Another reason is due to how Google judges the content on a website. Using a bot, Google crawls sites to find what type of content is on each page. Given that this site is relatively new and unsaturated with content, Google has a hard time determining what people on this site would be most interested in seeing. As mc-mega.com continues to grow, this problem will soon be solved.

    I have a suggestion!
Feel free to drop and suggestions you might have down in the comments. MegaCraft is still a community and because of that I want to get everyone's feedback. Think ads are the spawn of Satan? Post it! Love the idea of supporting MegaCraft via ads? Post it as well!

I hope this post clears up some questions on why were are running ads,

    MegaCraft Team

Most ads are CPC (cost per click), however Google occasionally puts in CPM (cost per mile [cost per 1000 impressions]) that are per view. Rule of thumb for ads however is only click things you are legitimately interested in. Fraudulent clicks are bad and often return no revenue for the producers (content creators, etc.) and can lead to trouble. This applies for all sites, not just the MegaCraft site.

Don't do that. Invalid clicks are bad and will not provide us with any revenue.
